Why a Fixed Path Can Miss the Cup
Remembering a reaching path does not necessarily tell a robot how to pick up a cup in the current situation. If the cup moves, replaying the original movement may still take the hand to the old spot. PHAIN EP02 uses this illustration to explain why demonstrations need the situation in which an action happened.
A more informative demonstration links the cup’s position, the hand’s approach and the outcome of the same operation. Recording task-relevant changes and their corresponding adjustments can show how the task is performed under different conditions. More recordings do not automatically mean more useful experience.
Collection does not mean learning is complete. Human actions may need adaptation to robot capabilities, learning methods differ, and behavior still needs testing in new situations. The next episode explains how robots learn from demonstrations.
Useful experience includes both the movement and the situation in which it happened.
